E46 M3 Pre‑Purchase Inspection Checklist (S54) — What to Look For

GM. Buying an E46 M3 isn’t about finding a “perfect” car — it’s about finding a car where the expensive stuff is either handled or priced in.

This checklist is designed to help you screen cars fast, avoid getting distracted by shiny paint, and show up to a real PPI with the right questions.

If you can only remember one thing: records + evidence > mileage + vibes.

What to bring

  • Flashlight
  • Paper towel/rag
  • OBD2 scanner (basic is fine)
  • Gloves
  • Notepad (or Notes app)

Before you even meet: quick questions

  1. Any accidents / repaint?
  2. Any overheating history?
  3. Any warning lights currently on?
  4. SMG or 6MT? (If SMG: has the pump ever been replaced?)
  5. Rod bearings — done? (When + paperwork?)
  6. VANOS — serviced/rebuilt? (What exactly was replaced?)
  7. Subframe/rear floor — inspected/reinforced?
  8. Any oil consumption? Any smoking on startup?

Cold start checks

You want the car cold. A warm car can hide a lot.

  • Idle should settle fairly quickly
  • Listen for deep knocking (investigate hard)
  • Light valvetrain tick can be normal-ish; you’re looking for abnormal/new noises

Test drive script

  1. Warm it up gently
  2. Check for vibration at 50–70 mph
  3. Medium brake from ~60→20 (shake = investigate)
  4. Low speed turns: listen for clunks
  5. Once warm: pull through midrange for hesitation/limp
  6. Coast-down: listen for rear whine/hum
  7. After: pop hood again (new coolant/oil smells?)

Pass / Negotiate / Walk

Usually walk (unless priced like a project): overheating symptoms/history with no documentation, active warning lights, obvious rear floor damage with no plan/proof of quality repair.

Usually negotiate/budget: tired bushings/shocks, cosmetic wear, tires/brakes due, minor seepage.
